Botox: Everything You Need to Know
Benefits, Results, and What It Treats
Botox is a popular cosmetic treatment, renowned for its ability to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It effectively treats dynamic wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements, such as crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines between the eyebrows. It can also help contour the face by lifting the eyebrows, opening the eyes, and lifting jowls. By temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause these wrinkles, neurotoxins help create a smoother, lifted, more youthful appearance. Besides its cosmetic benefits, Botox can also be used to treat various medical conditions, including neck and jaw or masseter tension.
How It Works
Botox works by blocking the nerve signals to the targeted muscles, preventing them from contracting. This is achieved through the injection of botulinum toxin type A, a purified protein derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. When injected in small, controlled amounts, Botox temporarily paralyzes the muscles responsible for creating wrinkles, thereby smoothing out the skin's surface. The effects of Botox are localized to the injection area, ensuring that the surrounding muscles and tissues remain unaffected. The treatment is quick and minimally invasive, typically taking only a few minutes to perform.
What to Expect Before, During, and After the Treatment
Before undergoing Botox treatment, it's essential to have a consultation with a qualified practitioner to discuss your goals, medical history, and any potential risks. At Fiora Aesthetics, we carry different brands of neurotoxin including Botox, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. You may be advised to avoid certain medications and supplements that can increase bruising, such as aspirin and blood thinners, for a few days before the procedure. During the treatment, the practitioner will cleanse the target area. Using a fine needle, Botox is injected into specific muscles with precision. The entire procedure usually takes about 10 to 20 minutes. In general, there is little to no pain.
After the treatment, you might experience slight redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites, which typically subsides within a few hours to a couple of days. It's important to avoid pressure to the treated areas (rubbing, massaging, wearing hats or helmets) and to stay upright for at least four hours following the procedure. You should also refrain from strenuous activities for 24 hours. Most patients begin to see noticeable results within 3 to 7 days, with the full effects becoming apparent in about two weeks. The results of Botox generally last for 3 to 4 months.
